Tell us about your life before you started the program. How did you feel about yourself and your body?
Before I started my journey with Beachbody, I had terrible eating habits. My diet consisted of fast food breakfast sandwiches to start the day. Lunch consisted of either more fast food, pasta, or Kraft mac n’ cheese. Dinner was more of the same. Any time I would try to diet I would lose motivation after a few days. I worked 45 hours a week on an irregular schedule, so getting in a routine with cooking and working out at the gym wasn’t easy for me. To make matters harder, none of my friends could work out with me on a consistent basis due to my schedule. I did not like my body at all. I was continually gaining weight and no matter what I seemed to do I couldn’t stop gaining and losing any of it felt like a lost cause. Graduating high school I was around 270 and about six years later I was around 380. Around that time, I was able to get into somewhat of a routine with running and lost 50 pounds. That winter, I fell back off the wagon due to lack of direction and gained back 20 pounds before.
What inspired you to change your life and begin your transformation journey?
I was inspired to go through this journey to transform my body and my life due to my declining health and the people around me. In 2013 I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism where my body was not getting enough thyroid hormone. Because of this, my metabolism was not as good as it was supposed to be. This caused me to keep gaining weight. I was put on medicine to help get my metabolism where it was supposed to be. Later I met my girlfriend, Emily, who has helped me so much in this process and has been so supportive and loved me for who I was. Then I was ran down by my future Beachbody Coach, Ginger. I was outside running one day to try to get back into exercising and she saw me and pulled her car over. She chased me down in her skirt to tell me about Beachbody and how she could help me. Ginger really helped me figure out which program was right for me. Between my health, Emily, and Ginger, I decided it was time to change my life.
What is the greatest challenge you faced before beginning the program? How did the program and Beachbody® help you overcome that challenge?
The greatest challenge I saw in the beginning was keeping with the hour long workouts and not giving up. I was at 350 pounds and it was extremely tough to do many of the workouts that I was being challenged to do. Tony Horton’s, “Do your best and forget the rest” reminded me to keep pushing through. I knew that it wasn’t about being able to do everything as I was watching it be done and as many times as it was done, I just needed to get to test my limits. I could push myself every day during every workout. Once I started seeing results it became easier to make sure that I did the workouts every day. The feeling of weighing yourself after a week and seeing a few pounds lost is an incredible feeling. I am extremely grateful that I have been working hard enough to get that feeling each week for the last 12 months.
What in particular did you like about the program you chose?
With the help of my Coach I chose P90X3. It was definitely a good fit for my style. I was looking for a good amount of cardio that was also supplemented with muscle building. The variety was by far one of my favorite aspects of the program. Just when you start to get a little bored with the workouts each week, there is something new and you are challenged again. I found this to be a great challenge for my muscles and I contribute this to be a big part of my success. Of course, I can’t forget to mention Tony himself. I find his comments during the workouts hilarious and extremely motivational. When I swing my arm, I like to hear about what soup we are stirring up, as long as it’s healthy.
Describe the results you achieved with your Beachbody program. Which achievements are you proud of?
I am not even sure where to begin here. To start off, I have lost over 140 pounds in just over a year. That is the proudest achievement of my life. Being able to shop in the normal-sized sections of stores has brought me to tears. Being able to shop for clothes at any store because I am down to a medium from a 4XL is incredible. I was so used to having to drive a half hour to the closest big and tall store just to find a t-shirt or anything in my size for that matter. I am down from a size 54 waist to a 36. A size 4XL shirt to a medium. I am lifting more than I have ever been able to before and I am running at speeds I haven’t reached since I was 13. All of these achievements make me feel extremely proud and excited for what is to come.
How has your life changed since completing your Beachbody program?
I now get t-shirts at every event I go to because I know I can fit into one of the size options they have. Before they would say they only have 2XL so I would have to just get a key chain or a sticker instead. My energy levels and focus have sky rocketed. I can keep up with my friends when we go hiking or play a sport and I no longer feel tired by 11:30 AM. I am able to stand in front of people and feel a much higher level of confidence then I have ever seen. I am no longer worrying about what people are thinking about me. I don’t have to worry about people talking behind my back about how fat I am or laughing at the big guy doing something that looks funny. I am at a new level of confidence and energy in life that I have never been at and it is the best time of my life. Beachbody has truly changed my life. I feel like I actually have a chance at a healthy life, rather than accepting that I would always be big and unhealthy. I feel like I have added at least 20 years to my life, and for that I am eternally grateful to the Beachbody programs and community.
How did participating in a Challenge Group help you reach your goals? How did your group support you and keep you accountable?
The daily checkups with a group of people that are doing similar kind of work gave me a sense of responsibility for completing my workouts each day. It also held me accountable. Going to the group and saying that I did not complete a day of my workout was not an option. On days that I wasn’t feeling like getting one in, I still did my best so I would be able to go to the group and say that I got the workout done. The group was very interested in my progress and was extremely supportive for the days I was not actually able to get a workout in and would encourage me to get right back on the next day.
How did your Team Beachbody® Coach support you on your journey?
She would message me every week or so to ask me how I was doing and to talk to me about any upcoming events that we could do together. She planned a weekly workout at her studio with a few friends to help us learn about different workouts and give valuable advice about eating and food. She was beyond supportive from the minute she met me and has played a huge role in getting my focus on what I needed to do to get to the healthiest point of my life.
How did a Beachbody Supplement or Nutritional Product or Program (such as Shakeology® or Beachbody Ultimate Reset®) support your transformation? What are the greatest benefits you gained? Did you see benefits to your energy, sleep, mood/mental clarity, digestion/regularity?
I had Shakeology every single morning for the last 12 months and it is now a breakfast I don’t feel right going without. I got a single smoothie blender and I use that to blend something up quick as I am going out the door each morning. This has given me a much better start to my day than the granola bars I would have in the past. I noticed very quickly that with this start to my day I was more focused at work and less tired in the evening.
