Tell us about your life before you started the program. How did you feel about yourself and your body?
I have always been active in sports, but as I got older, it was no longer an option. A series of life-changing incidents created too much stress on my body and my thyroid gave out. I didn’t realize this until I had gained a tremendous amount of weight. It took a change of lifestyle for me to get back to normal. I moved from the LA area to rural Missouri, and over the next four years, I managed to drop 100 lbs. on my own using various strategies I learned from reading books and magazines. But I hit a plateau, rebounded, and found myself unable to drop those pounds again. As a matter of fact, my doctor was concerned about my high cholesterol and encouraged me many times to take medication for it. I steadfastly refused, because I did not want to take any more drugs, and my previous research convinced me that the right diet and lifestyle would correct the problem. I felt like I was close to losing the battle.
What inspired you to change your life and begin your transformation journey?
In July 2015, at 64 years of age, I weighed 170 pounds and was not happy with my condition. I had been struggling to diet and exercise on my own, but that was no longer working. I needed something more dramatic. My niece had become a Beachbody Coach and frequently shared her story on Facebook, so I contacted her. She got me set up that very day.
What is the greatest challenge you faced before beginning the program? How did the program and Beachbody help you overcome that challenge?
I was a lone wolf. I was the only one pushing me to do better, to lose the weight, and to keep on going. After I joined Beachbody, my niece invited me to a Challenge Group, where I (virtually) met many other ladies who were just like me — also struggling. I recently joined Sagi’s Beast Up Family Legacy on Facebook and enjoy the camaraderie and pictures of other Body Beast fans.
What in particular did you like about the program you chose?
My niece chose my first program based on questions she asked me about what exercises I liked most. It was 21 Day Fix, and I was amazed and happy at how it incorporated weights and cardio to achieve my initial weight loss. I learned about plyometrics, got my first taste of yoga, and found that I loved Pilates. I’ve since moved on to other programs, but even now I love to go back and push play on those routines.
Describe the results you achieved with your Beachbody program. Which achievements are you proud of?
First and foremost, I lost 9 lbs. and 10 inches in the first three weeks of the program. The color-coded container nutrition program was easy to follow and fundamental to my weight loss, and the fitness program helped me feel stronger. After six months, I had achieved the weight loss I wanted and started on a bodybuilding regimen.
How has your life changed since completing your Beachbody program?
Based on my initial experience with 21 Day Fix, I purchased 21 Day Fix EXTREME, followed by P90X3. I loved the weight lifting routines, the cardio, and the active rest days. With P90X3 I started using heavier weights and pushing myself to get stronger and build muscle. Then Beachbody announced the release of The Master’s Hammer & Chisel, and I was right on top of that. I started MHC on January 4, 2016 and followed the schedule for 60 days. It was a natural progression to Body Beast. I really love lifting weights, and my body has responded with bigger, stronger muscles.
How did participating in a Challenge Group help you reach your goals? How did your group support you and keep you accountable?
I participated in Challenge Groups sponsored by my local Coach and found that sharing my results gave inspiration to others. I now belong to three other Challenge Groups on Facebook. They are great for keeping me accountable on a daily basis.
How did your Team Beachbody Coach support you on your journey?
My Coach and her down-line provided the Challenge Groups on Facebook and made sure I was invited to each one. They also posted nutrition guidelines, tips, and hints. On especially major occasions (posting pictures after the end of a program), they were always right there with high-fives and encouraging comments.
How did a Beachbody supplement, nutritional product, or program (such as Shakeology or Beachbody Ultimate Reset) support your transformation? What are the greatest benefits you gained? Did you see benefits to your energy, sleep, mood/mental clarity, or digestion/regularity?
Here I must give a shout-out to Performance Energize and Performance Recover. There were days when I was lethargic and slow, and one helping of Energize blew out the cobwebs and made me come alive again. I love that stuff! I also started taking Recover + Creatine when I began Master’s Hammer & Chisel. By all rights, at my age (65 years), I should have been crippled after 5 days of that program. But I credit Shakeology and Performance Recover + Creatine with helping me recover from the intensity of these workouts.2 With Body Beast I was taking daily doses of Fuel Shot and Base Shake. I could tell the difference in my energy level when I took the supplements.2
Did you achieve any other measurable improvements with a Beachbody supplement, nutritional product, or program (e.g. blood pressure, blood sugar, triglycerides, etc.)?
My doctor is no longer talking about medication; in fact, she is stunned at the results. My good cholesterol was over 113 on my last check-up, and she claims it rarely goes over 100 in most people.2
