FIXATE Caramelized Pearl Onions
Whether you’re preparing a holiday turkey or meal-prepping proteins, Caramelized Pearl Onions are a terrific accompaniment that you may not have considered.
Not only is this recipe incredibly easy to prepare – thank goodness for slow cookers – it has the ability to enhance the flavor of whatever meat you’re cooking, and is flavorful enough to stand alone as an umami-filled vegetarian side dish.
This six-ingredient dish is almost effortless.
In fact, Portion Fix creator Autumn Calabrese and her brother, chef Bobby Calabrese demonstrate the entire preparation in this episode of their healthy cooking show, FIXATE.
Frozen pearl onions are the key ingredient here, and there is a very good reason why: peeling dozens of tiny pearl onions is no picnic.
For this recipe, simply add frozen pearls, a few sprigs of fresh rosemary, a shot of maple syrup, and a few flavor enhancers to a slow cooker, and let them work their magic for a few hours. It’s that simple.
When they’re ready, serve these caramelized pearl onions whole, or puree them to create an impressive condiment.
Pureed onions, can be added by the spoonful to soups, spread on sandwiches, or served on a thin slice of toast to create a unique hors d’oeuvre. Watch how it’s made!
