Chewy Whole-Grain Bars
Store-bought snack bars beware, there’s a new homemade bar in town that tastes better and is so easy to make. When you’re hungry between meals, you’ll want to reach for one of these Chewy Whole-Grain Bars that are packed with protein and wholesome ingredients.
Autumn Calabrese asked her brother, Chef Bobby Calabrese to create a recipe for a homemade, whole-grain bar that she could snack on and feel good about feeding her son. The caveat was that this bar needed to be moist, chewy, and delicious. We’re happy to tell you that Bobby knocked this challenge out of the park. Quinoa, flax, chia, and sunflower seeds bring in the protein. Old-fashioned rolled oats, all-natural almond butter, and sweet banana bind all of the ingredients together and give these bars their chewy, gooey texture. Autumn and Bobby add a delightful combination of raisins, dried cherries, and dried apricots to their bars, but any dried fruit will do. Dried cranberries, pineapple, mango, and currants would also work well with this recipe.
Watch how these whole-grain bars are made in this episode of the FIXATE cooking show. The brother-sister duo will share a great trick that keeps them from getting stuck to the bottom of the pan when they bake. Instead of pressing the seed mixture into a baking pan, Autumn measures out perfect servings into muffin cups. This way, once they are baked, there is no cutting, no scraping, and each bar is conveniently pre-wrapped and easy to take on-the-go.
